What to Wear to Your Photo Session

Picking the perfect outfits for your photo session can be overwhelming and stressful - but it doesn’t have to be! Here are a few tips to help you plan! This guide can be used for all kinds of sessions - engagement, couple, family, and more.

Focus on coordinating and complimenting each other- not matching!

Pick a color palette of 2-3 colors that matches your vibe and run with it! I generally recommend neutrals and earth tones, but pick colors that feel right to you. Take into consideration where you will be taking photos AND where you want to display the photos in your home! Do either of those make a difference?

Be mindful of patterns!

Patterns are absolutely okay - but try to stick with simpler prints so they aren’t too distracting in photos. Stay away from everyone wearing bold patterns as that can be too overwhelming and could clash!

No logos!

There’s nothing worse than getting your gallery back, loving the images, and then realizing every photo looks like a Nike commercial. Try to stick with clothing with no branding so it isn’t the center of attention!

Wear something that feels like you!

You do not need to pick outfits you find on Pinterest or trending photos on instagram - pick outfits that authentically match your personality! The session is meant to celebrate you, your family, your love. Go with that ruffle sleeve, that long dress, or jeans! Whatever fits you best.

Be intentional with your accessories!

Accessories are a great way to add a little bit of spice and switch up your look if you don’t want to completely change outfits! They can help pull everything together so you better compliment each other. Grab those fun earrings, your wide brimmed hat, or in this case your favorite bandana to match your favorite humans.

Don’t be afraid to layer!

Wearing layers will add some dimension, interest, and diversity to your images! Adding layers is the perfect excuse to add something of a different texture. The key to wearing layers is to not wear too many bulky things on top of each other. Keep things tailored so you look more styled and less disheveled!

The most important thing is that you are comfortable!

Is there a long walk to the photo location? Is it going to be cold or really hot? Your photo session should be a fun experience! If you are uncomfortable for other reasons then you aren’t giving yourself the ability to fully enjoy and soak in the moment (and you will be able to tell on camera!)
